There were Plans for a corridor
stretching from the Chinese border to Pakistan's deep water ports on the
Arabian Sea date back to the 1950s, and first of all both the countries were motivated
in construction of the Karakoram Highway.
The Karakoram Highway (KKH), also known
as the China-Pakistan Friendship Highway, is one of the highest paved international
roads in the world. It connects the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China
and Gilgit–Baltistan of Pakistan across the Karakoram mountain range, through
the Khunjerab Pass (Pak-China Border), located at an elevation of 4,693 metres
(15,397 ft). The Karakoram Highway has its North end at Kashgar, Xinjiang,
China and South end at Hasan Abdal, Punjab, Pakistan. The road is a popular
tourist attraction. It is referred to as the Eighth Wonder of the World.
Chinese had an interest in Pakistan's
deep-water harbour at Gwadar had been rekindled by 1998 and in 2002 China began
construction at Gwadar port which was completed in 2006. The above plans have
been executed in terms of The China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (known as CPEC)
is an economic corridor comprising a collection of following projects. CPEC
aims to facilitate trade along an overland route that connects Kashgar (China) and
Gwadar (Pakistan).
